The Carrot Initiative is a south Minneapolis-based nonprofit organization that was created to be the catalyst that will bring a full-service grocer to the West Powderhorn community.
Our neighborhoods – Bancroft, Bryant, Central, and Powderhorn Park – lack a full service grocery store and as a result the community faces reduced access to healthy foods, a greater risk of chronic disease, and a lowered sustainability because of the greater reliance on the personal vehicle. The US Department of Agriculture recognizes this deficiency and has identified the western portion of the Bryant neighborhood a food desert, the only neighborhood of its kind in south Minneapolis.
Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the private market has not brought a grocery store to our community. We hope that through advocacy, enthusiasm, and hard work of the Carrot Initiative and the community we can be the catalyst that will bring a grocery store to our area.
We are an organization run by neighborhood volunteers who seek no other reward besides bringing healthy food to our community.
